Integrate Userplane Webmessenger with Wordpress – Part 1

You know, some of the good part of blog theory was that blogs would be like diaries that the world could read. They would be spontaneous, whatever pops into your mind, as a diary would be. - Gregg Easterbrook

Userplane provides plug-ins for a number of web content management and social networking systems, including Facebook, OpenSocial, Drupal, and WordPress. This week I’ll show you how to get started with the process of integrating Userplane’s Webmessanger 2 with your WordPress blog. Userplane also provides plug-in integration for Webchat 2 and Webrecorder.

Requirements and Downloads

Before you can use the Userplane plug-ins with your Wordpress blog, you’ll want to make sure you meet the minimum server requirements, which include:

  • Apache 2.2.3
  • PHP 5.1.6 (5.2)
  • MySQL 5.0.22
  • Wordpress 2.3.1

The first thing you’ll need to do is download the Wordpress plug-ins from here.

Wordpress Plug-in Upload

To install plug-ins you need to copy the files to the /wp-content/plugins folder on your Wordpress web site. You’ll need to use the ftp application you typically use to manage content on your web site, or your web site may have a web based file administration tool. However you manage your content, upload the plug-in zip file and make sure it is unzipped in the /wp-content/plugins folder. One issue that I encountered unzipping the files was that they unzipped into a wordpress folder. I needed to move the folders contained in the wordpress folder up on level, so that they were sitting in the plugins directory. If you do not do this they will not appear in Wordpress as plug-ins.

Required Email Message

Before we can configure the userplane plug-ins, you need to send an email message to support@userplane.com with the following information:

  • Must state that you are a “Wordpress site”
  • Site or Company Name
  • Technical Contact Information
  • Business Contact Information
  • Desired Usage Plan: Free or Paid (see Pricing Page for more information)
  • Website URL: (ex. www.yoursite.com)
  • Name of the applications installing (Webmessenger, Webchat, and/or Webrecorder).

Next Week...

It will take up to a day to configure your account, and email you the information you’ll need to configure the plug-ins you’ve installed. Next week once we’ve received the necessary configuration information, I’ll show you how to finalize the Userplane Wordpress plug-in configuration.
