SXSW Day 3 and Ambient Messaging

Sorry for the delay in posting, got a little distracted yesterday.  Day 3 at SXSW was tremendous fun, seeing independent movie studios arguing with Microsoft and Sony regarding the future of DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blue-Ray, was awesome.  Needless to say almost all of the people in the room were siding with the independent studios, though everyone including Microsoft and Sony were united against Wal-Mart.  For example, Wal-Mart sells 45% of all DVDs in this country, and because they have limited shelf space they only carry new, mainstream movies, making the chances of shoppers finding new independent titles, or even old classics remote at best.

Last night was the Yahoo TabBar party and Light Bar.  The party was packed, of course an open bar never hurts, but what was interesting, is that Yahoo only promoted Flickr, Upcoming, JumpCut, and Pipes.  Of those 4 only one has the word "Yahoo" in it.  To me, Yahoo is learning that in the developer world, things like Yahoo IM, Mail, and Pictures do not carry the same cache as say Flickr.  Of course, those who read the blog know I do a lot with Flickr, which is a perfect segue to...

Ambient Messaging 0.3
--------------------------------
The latest version of Ambient Messaging takes advantage of geo-encoded locations for AIM users.  For those who do not understand what that means, is when you set your location, either "city/state", or an exact address, our servers will geo-encode that location into a lat/long.  So what I do now is take that geo-encoded location for you and all the buddies on your buddy list, and create a bounding box 7x7 miles, and pull all the geo-tagged photos from Flickr.

The other addition to the widget is a menu item, where you can right click on a picture and see it's exact location on the map.  I also improved the tooltips so you can see the user name and location for each picture on mouse over.

As always the code can be viewed in its entirety using notepad or your favorite text editor.  Just change the "awi" extension to "zip."
