OK, it has been a long time since I have blogged on dev.aol.com and lots has been going on in the AIM world. I will try and do the abridged version to catch everyone up on the client(s). the APIs and other fun gadgets we are playing with.
Client update
---------------
We have released the latest beta of AIM version AIM 6.2.14.2 and that is available on beta.aol.com. In this first beta in the AIM 6.2 cycle we have officially added support for the dark themed client, that I showed how to hack in AIM 6.1. In addition we changed the colors of the screen names in the IM History window. Keep in mind this is an early beta, and there will be a lot more features to come.
API Updates
---------------
We released Open AIM 1.2.4 Windows SDK in May. This SDK corresponds with the same SDK that was used in AIM 6.1 GM. The reason for this is so developers can easily build plugins that work with the latest public AIM release. We continue to add to our client APIs and to support Windows, Mac, Linux, Windows Mobile and Java platforms. On the Web front there will be some exciting new stuff arriving soon on that front. What is really neat is that we are working on making custom data IMs from the Web IM communicate with the client SDK custom session code. This means you can play a 2-player game where one person is playing via their web browser, while the other person is playing via the AIM client.
Plugin Updates
----------------
A new Ambient Messaging plugin was release last week, and this plugin works with both AIM Lite and AIM 6.2 For those who are not familiar with Ambient Messaging it is a javascript AIM plugin that pulls geo-tagged pictures from Flickr based on the location of you and your buddies on your buddy list. These pictures are then shown in at the bottom of your desktop.
AIM Music Link will have a new launch in the next few weeks that will include some new features and simplified UI. We have launched a new version of the Location Plugin that fixes a bunch of bugs, and we continue to work on improving and extending AIM features via AIM Gadgets.
So that is the State of my Union, or at least what I am working on right now. IF you are an internal AOL employee and will be attending the developer conference tomorrow (June 7th) I will be speaking at 130PM on how we can take advantage of Open AIM to build very cool social plugins.
