Open XDrive - Why It's Cool

In giving XDrive Desktop a perfect five star rating, the reviewers at C/Net had this to say:

"We think XDrive Desktop is an excellent method of storing files online."

I agree! The basic premise is that you get 5 GB of online storage...for free. That's it. No strings, no gotchas, no "except in Lancaster, Conneticut" (is there such a place? I have no idea, but you get the point).

Open XDrive provides the following (from the guide, which can be accessed here):

  • User allocated storage
  • Full file system with full CRUD and I/O
  • Sharing and Access Control to assets
  • Email and publishing assets
  • Generation of thumbnails and other media metadata
  • Expansion by "connecting" to additional services

One nice feature is that resources are allocated to the user, not the developer or the instance. This can allow you to make resources available to lots of users, but they control and manage their resources, making things much simpler for you as a developer. I've used other services where the developer had to manage resources, and let me tell you, this way is better. LOTS better.
