MapQuest Supports OpenID
In Feb. 2007, John Panzer's blog post on "AOL and OpenID, Where we are" excited the blogoshere with the annoucement of AOL's support for OpenID as an OpenID Provider. In looking back at my own blog post, Eve Maler left a comment regarding when AOL would support OpenID as a relying party (RP). I'm happy to announce that while it's a little overdue, today's the day!

Recent industry events like the OpenID Content Provider Advisory Committee meeting in NY and the Internet Identity Workshop 2008b have raised the awareness that OpenID Relying Parties want more than just an authenticated URL. They also desire/require user data for the user who just "proved ownership" of the URL (i.e. their OpenID). This brings up a number of user experience issues as evidenced by this thread on the OpenID general mailing list.

OpenID Relying Party Software as a Service
As was recently discussed at IIW 2008b (and many other times over the last couple years), one issue with OpenID adoption is the lack of Relying Party support (a.k.a. web sites that accept OpenIDs). There are a number of issues with this and many have been discussed in the past (e.g. does the web site "trust" the OpenID Provider?).

Is AOL exploiting OpenID?
Yesterday, Michael Arrington (of Tech Crunch) posted an article posturing that AOL (along with Microsoft, Google and Yahoo) are attempting to exploit OpenID by being OpenID Providers (OP) and not becoming OpenID Relying Parties (RP). I attempt to address a number of issues in this post below.

A Primer for OpenID with PHP
by Jack Herrington

OpenID is another one of those "cool technologies you've never heard of" type of deals. OpenID is an open source initiative that provides a way for Web users to register their identity in one place and then use that identity anywhere on the Web that supports OpenID. This means that, as a user, you don't have to keep creating (and remembering) new user names and passwords at every site you visit. And, as a service provider, you can identify and authenticate users that show up at your site without having to do all of the user management involved in giving them access. The list of services that support OpenID is growing, but not as fast as it should be given how cool and useful OpenID is. Hopefully, this article will help with that. Read More... -
